I haven’t posted anything in a while but after watching the video Kony 2012, I was compelled to blog and spread the word out in anyway I could (and can). To begin with, many people don’t know who Joseph Kony is. To put things simply, he is evil.He is the world’s worst war criminal. Joseph Kony first came to power in Uganda when he took over leadership of an existing rebel group in 1987. He renamed the group the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). When Kony found himself running out of fighters, he started abducting children to be sex-slaves and soldiers. The boys are forced to become members of the LRA while the girls are raped and made into sex slaves. The children soldiers are forced to kill people, beginning with their parents. They are encouraged and forced to kill, rape, and mutilate innocent people. The LRA is no longer active in northern Uganda (its orignination) but ,it has spread to other places. For over 26 years, Joseph Kony and the LRA have abducted more than 30,000 children and displaced at least 2.1 million people. He must be stopped. This is where the organization Invisible Children and the Kony 2012 campaign come in.
As their website says….
“INVISIBLE CHILDREN’S KONY 2012 CAMPAIGN AIMS TO MAKE JOSEPH KONY FAMOUS, NOT TO CELEBRATE HIM, BUT TO RAISE SUPPORT FOR HIS ARREST AND SET A PRECEDENT FOR INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE…”
And they are doing just that. At this time, U.S. military advisers are currently deployed in Central Africa on a ‘time-limited’ mission to help stop Ugandan forces stop Kony and disarm the LRA. However, those military advisers can be called back if the U.S. government does not feel that the mission is important enough to the American people. Kony 2012 is fighting to make enlighten people about the evils and atrocities of the LRA and their leader Joseph Kony. They have recruited 20 ‘culture-makers’ such as Oprah, Mark Zuckerberg, Tim Tebow, Angelina Jolie, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber….Kony 2012 also is asking everyone to target 12 ‘policy-makers’ (the people that can make the policies to keep the military advisers in Uganda there). They are senators, previous presidents, cabinet members…… Kony 2012 makes it easy to message, contact, and call all 12 policy makers.
If everyone were to unite and strive to stop Kony, it could be done. And it will be done. I believe that no child or person should ever live in fear of being killed or captured. Nobody should ever be forced to kill anyone or be a sex slave. Everybody deserves a happy life. This is why I am writing about Kony 2012‘s message. As I see it, it is the first step of many to make the world a better place. If we can all be united in this cause, we can be united in others. We can solve world hunger and bring about world peace. Kony 2012 has given me hope. So please, follow the next ten steps.
